In a wood in the month of May
I went walking for the day
In the sun my mind did stray
I found that I had lost my way
I stopped next to a big old tree
My mind, my heart, my soul felt free
I saw an old plagued rat sit next to me
He said "Listen closely girl, I have a tale to tell thee"
The city of London is a grim place to be
Oh the things I could tell you, the things you would see
Through the gloom and the dark I heard the words "Please God, set me free"
So I went to discover the source of the plea
I saw a young girl with cuts on her arms
She picked me up and I sat in her palm
A carriage pulled up but she remained calm
Until they took her away, much to her alarm
I chased the carriage as fast as I could
But against a horse drawn carriage my efforts were no good
A surge of adrenaline surged through my blood
And I raced and I raced through the shit and the mud
I came to a set of great iron bars
They squeaked as the opened for the horse and the cart
I quickly snuck through and hoped to not get crushed by the gaurd
And the vision I saw almost stopped my little heart
A large brooding structure in a world of its own
Creeping vines up its walls and it's garden overgrown
Onto the ground the poor girl was thrown
As she got up she let out a sickening groan
Kicking and screaming she was dragged through the door
I silently followed her through a hole in the floor
The girl was not crazy of this I was sure
And I'm sure you'd be shocked at what my eyes saw
Along a great corridor lay room after room
I was getting quite scared, I had to find her soon
I cautiously walked through the chaos I was sure would be her doom
I thought at least with a friend I might be Immune
All around me I could hear crying amongst the screams
I wanted to believe it wasn't real, that it was a dream
When I finally found the girl, down her cheeks tears did stream
When I squeaked by her toes her eyes started to gleam
Picking me up I saw a smile on her face
Together somehow I knew we'd leave this place
To me which was a friend I could never replace
But the memories of the asylum I couldn't wait to erase
The days turned into weeks, weeks into months, month into years
And everyday I helped her to wipe away her tears
In that dark dirty room out came her nightmares and fears
I knew that I had to get her out of here
Now for some reason I know not, my life has been greatly prolonged
I watched her grow old but still she remained strong
This dank little prison had been her home for so long
But her reason for being there was to me always wrong
Eventually she gave up and her life faded away
I left the asylum with no further reason to stay
I still think about her with each passing day
And I can still hear her voice when the wind blows my way
On a solemn day it rains when I cry
I hides all the tears that fall from my eyes
I may be an old rat, who still wants to know why
But the answers I seek are like the moon in the sky
Now you know my story and my past, dear child
Tell all you know to make her suffering worthwhile
I want none to suffer again, for them only to smile
To live out there days in a state of denial
I thanked the plagued rat for his wisdom and words
As I left him I thought about that poor helpless girl
I honoured his wishes and told everyone about the horrors of this world
And how the poor girls sanity spiralled and swirled
Then one foggy night as I walked down the street
I could hear nothing but the wind and the sound of my feet
Out of nowhere they came, throwing me onto a carriage backseat
I was then knocked unconscious and half dead in defeat
When I awoke I saw four walls all dark and decayed
I picked myself up from where I was laid
In front of me sat the old plagued rat I met in May
"Don't fear girl, I'm here for you" I heard him say
